Reverend Dr Byron C. Clay

Reverend Dr. Byron C. Clay, Sr. was born on December 24, 1957.

Dr. Clay accepted his calling to preach the gospel at the age of 12. He was elected to the National Board of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC at the age of 14. He has served with Dr. Ralph Abernathy, Mrs. Coretta King, Dr. Martin L. King Sr., Mrs. Rosa Parks, Martin L. King lll, Rev, AL Sharpton and many others.

He has been involved in the fight for civil and human rights his entire life. Dr. Clay served as the National President of SCLC and had the rare opportunity of sitting in the same seat and behind the same desk as Dr. Martin L. King Jr.

Dr. Clay grew up immersed in the fight for civil rights because of his father's work. At the age of 11, the KKK burned their home. He remembered when the KKK burned crosses on their lawn and shot in their house. On January 1, 1966, the Klan placed a wooden coffin with a cut off chicken neck tied to a string on the steps of his father's church. The note read, "Rev. A.P. Clay died January 1, 1966." All of these experiences shaped Rev. Byron Clay's commitment to the nonviolent direct-action teachings of Dr. Martin L. King Jr.

Dr. Clay has been at the forefront fighting for justice and equality for all. His vision, courage, and commitment for social justice is undeniable. Dr. Clay is first and foremost a man of action, compassion, and prodigious energy.

In 1990, Dr. Clay organized the Winnie Mandela Tour in New Orleans. He was one of the first organizers for the Jena Six Movement that drew over 60,000 demonstrators. He led the effort to reopen the Dr. Martin L. King, Jr School of Science in New Orleans. He led hundreds of ministers and activists to save the contracts of the Black Garbage Disposal Owners in New Orleans. In addition, Dr. Clay organized and led the Poor People's Campaign in Jackson, MS in 2009. Always working above the call of duty, Dr. Clay set up 25 Relief and Distribution Centers across the region to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. He was the first to assist the victims of Hurricanes Ike and Gustav in Houma and Donaldsonville, LA. Currently, he enjoys feeding and ministering to the homeless population in New Orleans and visiting the nursing homes weekly.

When the Flood Disaster hit Houston and Beaumont Texas, Dr. Clay along with Dr. Charles Marquez delivered a truck load of supplies and distributed to the flood victims personally.

In 2022 Dr. Clay organized with his family three (3) truckloads of water to the residents of Jackson, Ms., during their water crisis. In March and April of 2023 Dr. Clay rushed to Rollins Forks, MS to deliver supplies to the tornado victims that devastated that Community. He organized, purchased & delivered cleaning supplies to flood victims of Hurricane Francine in Kenner.

Dr. Clay is a Christian theologian and an ardent advocate of Christian Education. He served for 14 years as president of the A. P. Clay Bible College with extensions in Hammond, Baton Rouge, Mississippi, and Haiti Dr. Clay has served as Professor of Systematic Theology at Christian Bible College, Director of Evangelism for Christian Minister's Union, Instructor for the National Baptist Convention Congress on Evangelism, and President of the State Congress of the LA Progressive Baptist Convention. He is the founder of the Louisiana Rescue Mission Fellowship and the Interfaith Christian Fellowship.

Dr. Clay was licensed to preach in 1972 and ordained in 1975 By the late Dr. A.L. Davis and the Ideal Baptist Association. He studied at Our Lady of Holy College majoring in Christo Centric Principles of Sociology.

Dr. Clay received his Bachelor of Bible Studies of Degree from Universal Bible College. He also studied at the Institute of Experienced Counselors and received his Certification and at the Institute of Legal Studies where he graduated in 1988. He received his Bachelors, Masters, Graduate Specialist, and Doctors Degree from Christian Bible College of Louisiana.

Dr. Clay has received numerous awards across the nation, including the Martin L. King, Jr. Award (many times), Freedom Bell Award in Alabama, the Governor's Award, and the New Orleans Most Outstanding Clergy Award.

In 2018, he was recruited by Rep. Randall Gaines (Chairman of the La. Black Cacus) to organize the statewide clergy to support the unanimous jury verdict that permanently removed the non- unanimous old Jim Crow era racially discriminatory law from the La. State constitution that was created in 1880.

Finally, Dr. Clay has help to save and rebuild numerous churches in Orleans, Jefferson and Hammond La. He also raised money and paid the entire trip of ten Pastor's to travel with him to do mission in Haiti and sent 8 Pastor's on a free trip to Israel to do mission work. He raised monies to Build a water well in Africa in honor of his Father Rev. Dr. A.P. Clay, Sr.

Dr. Clay has extensive experience with establishing community-based relationship and collaborative partnership for inter-governmental affairs. A proven leader with extensive experience with organizing conversations between citizens, government, and the faith-based community. Dr. Clay is a man of great compassion and is always trying to help others.

In February of 2025 the NFL Power Of Influence presented Dr. Clay with the Good Samaritan Award during the week of the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana.
